In 2009, the medical team at Combat Outpost Keating, consisting of one PA and three medics, pursued an uncommon medical intervention to keep a wounded Soldier alive in an extreme combat scenario using fresh whole blood transfusions. This skillset, once considered unorthodox, has become a valued, life-saving skill in pre-hospital care.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Recall the progression of fresh whole blood administration from the battlefield to the civilian pre-hospital setting
Describe the key components to develop a safe and effective fresh whole blood program
Explain the appropriate context in which to deploy a fresh whole blood transfusion
