USS: Transforming Tragedy into Innovation: The Evolution of Fresh Whole Blood Transfusion from the Battlefield to the Ambulance

In 2009, the medical team at Combat Outpost Keating, consisting of one PA and three medics, pursued an uncommon medical intervention to keep a wounded Soldier alive in an extreme combat scenario using fresh whole blood transfusions. This skillset, once considered unorthodox, has become a valued, life-saving skill in pre-hospital care.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
  • Recall the progression of fresh whole blood administration from the battlefield to the civilian pre-hospital setting
  • Describe the key components to develop a safe and effective fresh whole blood program
  • Explain the appropriate context in which to deploy a fresh whole blood transfusion
