Prehabilitation: How Preoperative Medicine Can Optimize Patient Outcomes

This session will educate attendees, in both primary care and specialty settings, on the proper preoperative assessment of patients undergoing elective noncardiac surgery. Attendees will learn how to use different risk assessment tools to guide preoperative testing and anticipate perioperative complications. They will also learn strategies to optimize patient health prior to surgery and how preoperative health impacts surgical outcomes and postoperative quality of life.

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Identify patients at higher risk of surgical complications in the preoperative setting
Choose which risk stratification tools to utilize and interpret how they can guide preoperative patient management
Proactively develop effective patient optimization strategies that will benefit postoperative health and outcomes
