Principles of Occupational Health: Managing Work Related Injuries and Illnesses

This session will introduce participants to the typical provider responsibilities and types of patient encounters seen in occupational health settings using case presentations. Furthermore, clinicians working in primary care who encounter potential occupational-related injuries will recognize the necessary components in obtaining occupational and environmental medical history to aid in determining causality. The OSHA recordability guide will also be reviewed as well as a list of commonly occurring occupational injuries seen in practice. Lastly, participants will be provided guidance on managing occupational-related injuries that require science, negotiation, and effective communication with the patient and employer.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Define occupational health and describe the typical duties of the occupational medicine PA
Identify the relevant components of the occupational and environmental history to determine causality
Explain occupational health disparities linked to social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantages
Identify common occupational injuries seen in primary care
Discuss the principles of managing occupational injuries including writing appropriate work restrictions
