Infants and young children are at a significantly increased risk of dying from child abuse and neglect. Due to their young age, they are often unable to tell a safe adult that they are being harmed. Signs of physical abuse, when present, are easily missed or discounted. This session will inform PAs how to recognize and respond to these subtle signs of abuse. Additionally, participants will understand how to acknowledge and combat bias when considering whether a child has been maltreated.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Identify the children most at risk of dying from child abuse and neglect
Define a sentinel injury
Apply a validated decision tool (TEN4-FACESp) to determine risk of abuse in a child under the age of four years
Examine how bias can influence how child maltreatment is recognized and reported
