Elevated liver enzymes are one of the most commonly identified laboratory abnormalities, but frequently they create more questions than answers amongst providers. This session will provide clear and concise evidence-based recommendations for the initial workup and management of patients with mild, moderate, and severe elevations of liver enzymes. By utilizing a case-based presentation model, providers will be able to actively apply the strategies reviewed in this lecture to fine tune their skills in the diagnosis and workup of patients with elevated liver enzymes.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Review the role of liver tests and their general function
Discuss initial workup of patients with mild, moderate, and severe elevations of liver enzymes
Develop a comprehensive differential diagnosis based on the degree of liver enzyme elevation
Recognize alarm presentations and when to refer for urgent evaluation
