A first-time seizure can be a distressing event for patients and providers alike. What workup and counseling does the non-neurologist need to provide? This session will use a case-based approach to discuss when to suspect a seizure, provoking factor evaluation, how to counsel patients about recurrent risk and safety concerns, and empiric anti-epileptic medication considerations.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Differentiate between likely seizure and other conditions
Implement appropriate evaluation to workup both provoked and unprovoked seizures
Recognize the factors that increase recurrent seizure risk
Develop appropriate seizure safety plan for patients
Select appropriate antiepileptic medications for patients based on comorbidities
