Saturday, May 17, 2025
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
CE: 1.00 AAPA Category 1 CME
This lecture focuses on integrating the 5Ms of geriatric care—mind, mobility, medications, (what) matters, and multi-complexity—into the management of surgical inpatients. Attendees will learn to apply these principles in pre-operative assessments, optimize patient outcomes, and manage post-operative care. The session includes practical examples, screening tools, and strategies for addressing common complications in older surgical patients.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Differentiate between dementia and delirium and apply appropriate screening tools (Mini-Cog, MOCA, CAM)
Perform mobility and functional assessments using the Get-Up-and-Go and Chair Stand tests, and evaluate ADLs and iADLs
Utilize medication reference tools (Beer’s Criteria, STOPP/START) to manage polypharmacy and reduce delirium risk
Identify patient goals and preferences, ensuring clear documentation of medical proxy and code status
Screen for frailty and understand its importance in surgical patients, integrating the 5Ms into pre-operative and post-operative care plans
