Transgender and gender-diverse people are an increasingly visible and vibrant part of our population and communities. These populations have historically had inadequate access to primary and gender-affirming care. Providing affirming healthcare, including gender-affirming hormone therapy, is an important way to improve care, access, and outcomes for this population. PAs in primary and specialty care are well poised to improve access to therapeutic care for this population, and all PAs can benefit from being familiar with the foundations of gender-affirming hormone therapy. Participants will leave this session able to utilize the most current guidelines for initiating gender-affirming hormone therapy for transgender and gender non-binary adult patients. Attendees will also be able to adjust pharmacologic care, monitor appropriate labs, manage more complex cases, and navigate appropriate referrals.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Obtain a gender-inclusive and professional medical, surgical, and social history, including collecting SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) data
Describe the range of non-pharmacologic treatment approaches for transgender and gender non-binary people
Initiate, titrate, monitor, and manage evidence-based and appropriate gender-affirming pharmacologic treatments for transgender and gender non-binary adults
Select appropriate laboratory testing, modify treatment regimens, and identify complications for transgender and gender non-binary adults, and refer as appropriate
