Veterans have significant risk factors for traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and often they are undiagnosed and/or untreated. Between 2007-2020 more than 100,000 Veterans were identified as having a previously undiagnosed TBI and were able to get the care they deserved through proper identification. This presentation will provide PAs with the skills to help diagnose and evaluate TBIs, and learn how to make recommendations for the appropriate treatment of the numerous possible sequelae of chronic TBI.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Define a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in accordance with Department of Defense and Veterans Administration guidelines
Discuss the pathophysiology and incidence of TBI within the active duty and Veteran populations
Describe the differences and similarities between post-traumatic stress disorder and TBI
Identify, workup, and make treatment recommendations for the most common chronic TBI symptoms and sequelae
