Behind the Blackout: Mastering the Diagnosis of Syncope
Tuesday, May 20, 2025
2:15 PM – 3:15 PM
CE: 1.00 AAPA Category 1 CME
This CME lecture will provide an in-depth exploration of the evaluation and differential diagnosis of syncope. Attendees will learn about the pathophysiology of syncope, as well as the initial evaluation steps, including patient history, physical examination, and electrocardiographic findings. Attendees will learn how to use the information gathered from the patient, in addition to diagnostics, to be able to distinguish between cardiac, reflex (neurogenic), and orthostatic syncope. Key diagnostic tools and risk stratification methods, such as the Canadian Syncope Risk Score, will be discussed to aid in identifying patients at high risk of adverse outcomes. Practical management strategies and appropriate use of further testing will also be highlighted, ensuring participants are equipped to handle syncope effectively in clinical practice.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Evaluate and integrate history, examination findings, and electrocardiographic data to accurately differentiate between cardiac, reflex, and orthostatic causes of syncope
Develop and implement evidence-based management plans for syncope, using risk stratification tools to identify high-risk patients for adverse outcomes
Assess diagnostic tests and imaging for syncope to optimize clinical decision-making and resource utilization in patient care
