The Three Amigos: Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic Disease Cases
Tuesday, May 20, 2025
10:30 AM – 11:30 AM
CE: 1.00 AAPA Category 1 CME
Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality for Americans and CKD is the most common cause of morbidity. One person dies every 33 seconds from CVD and someone’s kidneys fail every five minutes. In the spirit that acknowledges the interconnectivity of the heart, kidney and metabolic milieu in which they exist, the three largest internal medicine groups have banded together to identify and stage cardio-kidney-metabolic (CKM) disease. With the high costs associated with these organ systems (25% of all Medicare dollars go to CKD and heart disease costs $240 billion each year), it is vital to slow the growth of CKM disease. Presently, more than three-quarters of U.S. adults have stages 1-3 CKM syndrome. CKM is more common as we age, with 98% of adults over 65 years old staged with CKM. Faculty will use cases to identify, stage, intervene, and slow progression of the CKM patient.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Identify and stage the cardio-kidney-metabolic (CKM) patient
Discuss the framework of the CKM patient and how to calculate risk of morbidity and/or mortality
Using patient cases, discuss guideline-driven interventions shown to decrease risk of death and/or disability
