Neuropathy is a common complaint among patients presenting to primary care and various other specialties/subspecialties. This lecture explores basic evaluation for adult patients presenting with symptoms or complications that are concerning for peripheral neuropathy. Basic principles of neuroanatomy and localization will be followed by a practical approach to peripheral neuropathy in the outpatient setting. Key features of history, physical exam, and basic etiological workup will be reviewed. Attendees will learn to perform a basic neuropathy evaluation and be familiar with indications to refer to neurology and for electrodiagnostic testing (nerve conduction studies/electromyography).
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Describe relevant anatomy for pathological localization within the peripheral nervous system
Evaluate a patient with complaint of neuropathy symptoms using key aspects of the history and physical exam
Perform a thorough, but cost effective, basic diagnostic evaluation for peripheral neuropathy
Identify “red flag” symptoms and serious causes of neuropathy symptoms which may necessitate referral to neurology and other specialties
Anticipate the needs of neuropathy patients through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion
