Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is one of the most common causes of thrombocytopenia in children. While ITP typically is a self-limiting disorder, some patients will require therapy to prevent severe bleeding. Several key elements of the child’s history, physical exam, and laboratory findings can help to distinguish ITP from other more serious hematologic disorders. Recognition of ITP is a crucial skill for PAs who care for pediatric patients in outpatient, emergency medicine, and acute care settings.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Define immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) based upon the patient’s complete blood count
Identify pertinent past medical history details that may suggest ITP
Identify pertinent physical exam findings in a child with ITP
