Diverticular disease is common; it affects nearly half of people over the age of 60 and significantly impacts their quality of life. This case-based lecture will discuss emergent, acute, and non-emergent presentations of diverticular disease. Surgical and medical interventions, as well as prevention, will be discussed. Attendees will leave with an action list to be better able to recognize and manage this all-too-common problem.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Identify key epidemiological trends and risk factors associated with diverticular disease
Explain the underlying causative mechanisms and progression of diverticulosis to diverticulitis
Construct a management plan for conditions ranging from asymptomatic disease to the surgical management of acute presentations
List lifestyle and dietary interventions that may help prevent diverticular disease
