OCP Is Now OTC: Contraceptive Update for the Non-GYN Provider
Tuesday, May 20, 2025
8:00 AM – 9:00 AM
CE: 1.00 AAPA Category 1 CME
Following FDA approval, in 2024 a norgestrel oral contraception pill became available over the counter, joining levonorgetrel emergency contraception as the two direct-to-consumer hormonal contraception products available. With this change, PAs need to be prepared to answer questions and counsel patients about the contraception options available. Whether or not you prescribe birth control, knowledge about the impacts of the various forms of contraception are important to PA practice. This presentation will review the categories of contraception, indications and contraindications, as well as how to engage in a risk stratification conversation with patients.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Distinguish between the contraceptive choices available, highlighting the various indications and contraindications, including over-the-counter oral contraception
Explain relative risk of adverse outcomes in a way patients can easily understand
Devise methods to help patients decide which method is most appropriate for them
