Patients with endometriosis are at an increased risk for developing severe maternal morbidity complications, such as preeclampsia and eclampsia, which can ultimately lead to maternal mortality. Black women are five times more likely to die from preeclampsia and eclampsia than white women, yet are 50% less likely to be diagnosed with endometriosis in comparison to white women. Although literature documents the association between endometriosis and preeclampsia/eclampsia, there is minimal literature on how this correlation impacts Black women. The lack of available literature in Black women, calls for more inclusive endometriosis research and better approaches to diagnosing endometriosis.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Interpret the correlation between endometriosis and preeclampsia/eclampsia
Recognize that Black women are less likely to be diagnosed with endometriosis yet have the highest rates of preeclampsia/eclampsia
Identify how PAs can contribute to improving diagnosis of endometriosis in Black women
