Caring for Gay Men and People Engaging in Anal Sex

Gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are a diverse community with specific needs and healthcare disparities which often go unaddressed. MSM represent 2-10% of the U.S. population, live in every geographic location, and interface with every healthcare provider. Around a third of the populations engages in anal sex. This session will provide practical, comprehensive primary care management specific to patients engaging in anal sex including: 1) proper history/physical examination techniques and appropriate language, 2) vulnerabilities and health disparities beyond just sexual health needs, 3) appropriate preventive care including specific immunization indications and screening examinations, 4) considerations in diagnosis and treatment, 5) pearls in caring for this population, 6) intersections with race and other minority status, and 7) practical resources which can be used in a variety of settings on a daily basis.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Discuss specific health needs of gay men, MSM, and people engaging in anal sex
Perform a culturally sensitive history and physical examination for people engaging in anal sex
Identify preventive medicine needs related to anal sex including immunizations and screening examinations
Screen for, diagnose, and treat common medical conditions that disproportionally affect people who engage in anal sex
Identify resources to use in clinical settings to facilitate care of people who engage in anal sex
