Back pain with radiculopathy is a common complaint with causes ranging from simple muscular strain to severe spinal stenosis. Regardless of the origin of their symptoms, patients with lumbar radiculopathy may experience significant disruption to their everyday lives in the form of lost wages from an inability to work or suffer mental health consequences from being unable to participate in the care of their home/family. This topic has broad appeal to those working in primary care, urgent care, emergency medicine, and pain management where back and/or leg pain may be a chief complaint. Identifying signs/symptoms of severe neural compression will help guide early phases of care, and help expedite referral for surgical consultation to minimize patient suffering and long-term neurological injury.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Conduct a focused physical exam to identify neurological deficits
Interpret imaging reports
Create an appropriate treatment plan based on imaging and physical exam findings
