Obesity is a multifactorial disease comprised of various complications including behavioral, biological, environmental, pharmaceutical, and psychological factors. As the medical community continues to learn about obesity and its complications, we have realized that it is not as simple as "eat less, exercise more." Obesity is a disorder that requires various treatments including lifestyle modifications, behavioral changes, medications, treatment of complications, and at times, surgery. The 5-As model (ask, assess, advise, agree, and assist/arrange) was designed as a behavioral framework to assist with psychological complications and it is now used in the treatment of obesity medicine. This model is now being used to create patient-centered obesity treatment plans in primary care. It is imperative that PAs learn the concept of this framework to better assist our patients in their struggles with obesity.
