Obesity is the most prevalent chronic disease in the U.S. (and worldwide), with 42% of U.S. adults and 20% of U.S. children living with obesity. Yet, PAs and other clinicians often are woefully unprepared to manage obesity, as it is frequently not addressed during medical training. Recent advances in obesity care have demonstrated significant improvements in obesity and obesity-related complications. We now have evidence that we can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, heart failure, sleep apnea, and numerous other medical conditions when we treat obesity. Managing obesity allows clinicians to not only improve obesity, but the complications of obesity as well. Providers can, and should, revolutionize the way they manage patients and chronic diseases with evidence-based, compassionate obesity care.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Describe obesity as a chronic, progressive, multifactorial, treatable neurobehavioral disease
Identify numerous medical conditions that are impacted by obesity and recognize the impact that treating obesity can have on them
Implement the four pillars of obesity care to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for a patient with obesity
