What's New in Community-Acquired Pneumonia

Primary care clinicians must be well-versed in the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and keep abreast of the evolving trends, incidence, and prevalence of the most common and emerging pathogens. Likewise, while the recognition of a pneumonia on chest imaging is typically considered an entry-level competency, what should clinicians know about the utility of other diagnostic modalities such as ultrasound, urine antigen tests, biomarkers, etc.? First-line treatment recommendations have been virtually unchanged over the past decade; what are the newest recommendations for empiric coverage? What is the utility of newer antimicrobial therapies and other adjunctive therapies such as corticosteroids? This presentation aims to give primary care clinicians an update on current and emerging pathogens, diagnostic modalities, and antibiotics recommendation. The most up-to-date literature will be reviewed as evidence for any recommendations.
