Designed for the entry-level PA, this session will delve into the essentials of interpreting chest X-rays. After reviewing normal chest anatomy and the basic principles of radiography, attendees will learn the value of using a systematic approach to methodically evaluate a chest radiograph. Participants will build on the fundamental skills they have learned and will begin to appreciate the significance of key radiographic signs such as air bronchograms, peribronchial cuffing, and the silhouette sign. Attendees will realize the importance of correlating these findings with a patient's clinical presentation. The lecture will also address common diseases, such as atelectasis, pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, pleural effusions, and acute heart failure.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Explain the basic principles and limitations of chest radiography
Utilize a systematic approach to identify normal anatomic structures while interpreting a chest X-ray
Identify key radiographic signs, such as air bronchograms, peribronchial cuffing, meniscus sign, and silhouette sign when interpreting a chest X-ray
Identify common pathologies seen on chest X-rays, including atelectasis, pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, pleural effusions, and acute heart failure
