Updates in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Comprehensive Overview for Primary Care
Sunday, May 18, 2025
2:45 PM – 3:45 PM
CE: 1.00 AAPA Category 1 CME
This session will explore the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and focus on the two main subtypes: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. As patients often present to their primary care provider, urgent care, or the emergency department prior to diagnosis, participants will be equipped with the knowledge to identify red flags requiring further evaluation for IBD. We will discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to care, including the role of the primary care provider, as well as special considerations for pediatric, pregnant, and aging patients with IBD. As many patients are on immune-modifying therapy, we will review aspects of health maintenance including routine screening, immunizations, and long-term considerations for optimal care.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Recognize the clinical features and complications of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Differentiate between the two main subtypes of IBD: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
Identify red flags in patients presenting to primary care to determine further evaluation therapies
Review updates in treatment options including medications, surgical management, and dietary therapies
Highlight special considerations for health maintenance in patients with IBD
