UpToDateĀ® reports that five million Americans have an abdominal wall hernia (including inguinal hernias). It is important to be able to diagnose a hernia, refer patients to the appropriate care providers, and educate the patient on the concerning signs and symptoms of incarcerated and strangulated hernias. This session review the pathophysiology of various kinds of hernias, compare ventral hernias to diastasis recti, discuss signs and symptoms patients may present with, imaging, optimization, repair methods, postoperative recovery, postoperative restrictions, and the importance of patient education.
