"By the way...can I ask you about that weight-loss shot?" Primary care providers are increasingly being approached about ways to manage the chronic conditions of overweight and obesity. This presentation is intended to help primary care providers identify candidates for anti-obesity medications, as well as tailor pharmacotherapy options to individual patients. By the end of this lecture, participants should feel confident screening for overweight and obesity, ordering testing to screen for obesity-related comorbidities that impact medication management, and discussing risks and benefits of medication options as part of shared decision making with patients.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Identify patients with obesity who are candidates for pharmacotherapy
Recognize obesity-related comorbidities using laboratory tests and clinical tools
Explain indications for, and contraindications against, prescribing anti-obesity medications
Develop a shared plan for obesity pharmacotherapy with patients
Evaluate patient response to medication(s), and modify treatment when indicated
