Assistant Professor Adjunct / Director of Student Affairs Yale University Physician Assistant Online Program New Haven, CT, United States
With overcrowding in emergency departments, PAs are encountering higher acuity musculoskeletal injuries in general practice settings, including urgent care centers and primary care offices. This session will provide a case-based review of several common orthopedic injuries that can be easily overlooked if providers are not familiar with their diagnoses and presentations. Missing these cases can result in adverse outcomes for both the patient and the provider. Our objective is to equip you with the knowledge to avoid ortho trauma drama. We will also discuss evidence-based initial management strategies for the conditions covered. While all PAs may benefit from this review, it is specifically designed for those practicing outside of orthopedics.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
Highlight frequently overlooked orthopaedic conditions that can lead to negative patient outcomes if missed
Evaluate the critical elements of history-taking and physical examination in patients with musculoskeletal complaints to enhance diagnostic accuracy
Discuss evidence-based initial management strategies for commonly missed orthopedic injuries in general practice settings
